The Best Places to Visit in Andalusia

By Jonny cooper

Marvelous Andalusia is a backpacker's feast. This boiling hot region of Spain is situated in the south of the country; it's culture a mixture of mainland Spanish traditions and age-old African roots. From Andalusia's superb cities to its quiet whitewashed towns and remote beaches, this is a region that can be explored for days, months, and even years, on end.

For the incoming backpacker, one of the best things about Andalusia is its hostels. From Malaga hostels to hostels in Granada, Seville and Cadiz, budget accommodation here is some of the best to be found anywhere in Europe. Cheap and top rated, it makes a stay in the region that bit more enjoyable.

Four cities and countless untouched rural spots define Andalusia. Here's a taster of each…

Malaga

Malaga is often the first port of call for travelers heading to Andalusia, given both its well-connected airport, and the preponderance of package deals to the city. It's an interesting place: this is a city that, on first sight, seems to be all about big hotels and tourism, and yet on closer inspection it proves to be charmingly authentic - an alluringly crumbling homage to everything that Andalusia stands for.

The winding streets and grand edifices of the Old Town are likely to demand most of your attention while here. Aside from spending happy hours in neat cafes sipping on espressos and watching the world go by, things to do here include paying a visit to the splendid cathedral, and the Moorish architecture of the Alcazabar.

Backpackers heading to the city will be pleased to find many great hostels in Malaga , including Picassos Corner Backpackers Hostel and La Casa Mata Backpackers, both of which are frequently rated as being two of the best and cheapest places to stay in town.

Seville

Grand old Seville is a dream of a city - a rich and varied place that many consider their top point of call in Andalusia. Top attractions here include the spectacular Cathedral with its memorable Giralda tower, and the Alcazar, another memorable Moorish palace in Andalusia.

The spirit of flamenco is strong in Spain, and a great thing to do here is pull up a chair in one of the traditional flamenco clubs and drink the night away as a succession of performers take to the stage.

Granada

Granada is an eminently scenic place whose top tourist attraction is far and away the magnificent Alhambra Palace, which provides a magnificent backdrop to daily life in the city. Aside from the Alhambra, attractions in Granada are plentiful, with the Albayzin neighborhood a particular gem.

The Outback!

Andalusia's countryside is simply stunning. Expansive, hot, covered in olive groves and dry stonewalls, it's a real marvel that heralds a slew of picture-perfect whitewashed towns and dreamy stretches of idyllic coastline.

The beaches between Cadiz and Tarifa (a port of call for visitors on their way to Morocco) rank up there as some of the best, and most secluded, you'll find anywhere in Europe. Tiny villages such as Canos de la Meca and El Palmar crop up around these beaches, providing accommodation and eating options. A little inland from these, Vejer de la Frontera is perhaps the quintessential Andalusian town.

The accommodation

For your accommodation needs there are several hostel booking sites to choose from. However, research recently carried out by leading online travel news provider, EyeforTravel, which looked at Hostelworld and Hostelbookers (Two largest players) in some of the world's most expensive destinations including Europe, Australia and North America found HostelBookers to be cheaper. For the researched destinations travellers to top cities will find themselves with up to £15 extra in their pockets if they book with HostelBookers.
